Rome, Italy – President Joseph Nyumah Boakai of emphasized the urgent need for global action to combat food insecurity, particularly highlighting the plight of the African continent at the World Food Forum 2024,

Addressing a distinguished audience of heads of state, international organizations, and development partners, President Boakai underscored the stark reality facing millions across Africa, where one in five people go to bed hungry. “Africa is rich in resources yet is at the epicenter of the food crisis, grappling with challenges such as climate change, conflict, and inadequate agricultural infrastructure,” he stated.

Boakai’s speech focused on Liberia’s commitment to building a resilient agrifood system, advocating for sustainable practices that not only enhance food security but also boost local economies. He outlined Liberia’s plans to invest in agricultural innovation, including an Agro-Industrial Development Program centered on oil palm and cocoa, aimed at transforming the country’s agricultural landscape and addressing the significant shortfall in palm oil production.

“By empowering farmers and investing in rural infrastructure, we can improve supply chains and reduce post-harvest losses,” Boakai urged, calling for international collaboration to establish a robust engineering sector to support agricultural value chains.

He also stressed the importance of climate resilience in food production, advocating for climate-smart agricultural practices and research into drought-resistant crops. “The time for rhetoric has passed; we must act with urgency and determination to secure a sustainable future for all,” he declared.

The President’s vision includes fostering local food systems, strengthening social safety nets, and engaging in global partnerships to ensure comprehensive support for vulnerable populations. “Together, we can cultivate a future where no one faces the anguish of hunger,” Boakai concluded, rallying the international community to join Liberia in this vital mission.
