Plenary Cracks Down on Absentee Lawmakers, Threatens Suspension and Expulsion

The Plenary of the House of Representatives has mandated the Chief Clerk to notify embattled Speaker Hon. Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa, Rule of Law Caucus Chair Musa Hassan Bility, and three other lawmakers of potential disciplinary actions if they fail to appear in plenary on Thursday.

The enforcement of Rule 48.7 could lead to their suspension or expulsion.

This decision was taken on Tuesday through a communication from Bong County District 2 Representative James Kolleh.

Representative Kolleh’s communication highlights the recurring absenteeism of several House members, noting that their prolonged absence without excuses has deprived their constituencies of necessary representation.

List of Affected Lawmakers:
Cllr. Fonati Koffa (Grand Kru County District 2):8 session days absent

Musa Hassan Bility (Nimba County District 7): 6 session days absent, 2 days present

Taa Wongbe (Nimba County District 9): 8 session days absent

Roland Opee Cooper (Margibi County District 1): 6 session days absent, 2 days present

Luther S. Collins (Gbarpolu County District 2): 5 session days absent, 3 days present

Representative Kolleh emphasized that the absences violate the House’s Standing Rules, specifically referencing rules 20.1 and 20.2.

He called for due diligence to ensure that constituencies receive the representation they deserve.

Rule 48.7 allows for various disciplinary measures, including oral or written warnings, suspension with salary deductions, or outright removal for continued violations.

The Plenary aims to uphold accountability and ensure that elected representatives fulfill their duties.
