NCHE Cries for Increment in Budgetary Allotment

Paynesville, Liberia–The National Commission on Higher Education is calling on the government of Liberia to tackle what they consider as “Low budgetary allotment” so as to have effective operation in the sector.

In an exclusive interview with the Deputy Director for Quality Assurance and Compliance Mr. Moses M. Kesselly, he disclosed that the Commission has been understaffed and lacks logistics for mobility for movement, situation which is hindering the effectiveness of the Sector. Mr. Kesselly stated that the institution lacks vehicles that will enable their regular inspection across the country. annual allotment has been three hundred thousand ($300,000USD) for which about 90% is used for Staff Salary according to him, adding that the institution needs approximately US$2Million to reawakened the entity.

The Deputy Director, maintained that the inconveniences in implementing monitoring policy nationwide often led to spending their own resources on multiple occasions during the last six years. He further mentioned that funds generated from High learning Institutions are send to government through LRA leaving then with a little amount for operational activities.

As part of his plead, the Acting Director Kesselly also unveiled engagement plan with the newly Education Minister as well as the Senate Chair on Education, Nathaniel F. McGill for dialogue surrending their quest, at the same time reminding the executive headed by President Boakai in adherence to their request.

The National Commission on Higher Education as a regulatory arm for higher learning Institutions in Liberia has scored a lower mark in terms of monitoring, which which may have contributed to the proliferation of Colleges and Universities in the country.
