In a major boost for Liberia’s transport sector, the Government of Liberia, through the Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA), is set to procure a modern, multi-purpose ferry to ply the Liberian coastline.
The new ferry is not just for passengers – it is designed to carry containers, trucks, buses, SUVs, earth-moving equipment, and other vehicles, linking Monrovia to coastal communities and even neighboring countries where road transport is difficult.
According to LiMA, the initiative aims to strengthen coastal connectivity, boost regional trade, and provide a safe, efficient alternative for moving people and goods – especially to hard-to-reach coastal towns where bad roads have been a longstanding challenge.
The ferry will be operated under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The Government, through LiMA, will provide oversight and regulatory framework, while a private partner will bring in investment, operational expertise, and handle day-to-day management including vessel maintenance, safety, and revenue collection.
LiMA says the project is a strategic step toward leveraging Liberia’s vast maritime potential to drive economic growth, create jobs, enhance coastal commerce, and promote regional integration – all while adhering to Liberian laws and international maritime safety and environmental standards.
If realized, this could be the biggest maritime transport revolution Liberia has seen in years – easing the pressure on roads and opening the sea as a new highway for business.
