Monrovia — The Ministry of Labour has reaffirmed that all new applications for alien work permits must include proof of 30-day local job advertising, as part of efforts to prioritize Liberian employment.
In a public announcement issued Tuesday by Minister Cllr. Cooper W. Kruah, Sr., the Ministry reminded businesses, concessionaires, and the general public of the requirement under Chapter 45.1, sub-section 45.1 (c) (i) of the Decent Work Act of 2015 and Section 6 of Revised Regulation No. 17 of 2019.
According to the notice published over the weekend, employers seeking work permits for foreign nationals must show evidence that the position was advertised for a minimum of 30 days in two local newspapers, two local radio stations, and two Liberian websites, including the Ministry of Labour’s official website. Applicants must also provide proof that no qualified Liberian was available for the role.
“The requirement is intended to ensure that qualified Liberian citizens are afforded the opportunity to apply for available positions and participate in the recruitment process before foreign applicants are considered,” Minister Kruah stated.
The Ministry in a release urged all business entities and concessionaires to comply fully when submitting new work permit applications. Non-compliance, the Ministry implied, could result in delays or rejection of applications.
The Decent Work Act mandates “labor market testing” to protect local jobs, but the Ministry’s latest notice signals stricter enforcement amid public concerns over foreign labor in Liberia’s job market.
