LEC Announces Cracks Down on Power Theft Amid Landmark Energy Deal with Côte d’Ivoire

Monrovia, Liberia – The Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) says it is doubling down on efforts to enhance the nation’s power supply through two major initiatives: a rigorous crackdown on power theft and a groundbreaking Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Côte d’Ivoire.

Under the leadership of its Interim Management Team, LEC has announced a strategic focus on tackling power theft, which has long undermined the corporation’s financial stability and service delivery. Technical inspections and targeted enforcement operations are already underway to curb illegal connections. “Eliminating power theft is essential to protecting our revenue and improving electricity access for all Liberians,” an LEC representative said.

Complementing this internal reform is the finalization of a 50-megawatt energy agreement with Côte d’Ivoire’s CI-Energies and Compagnie Ivoirienne d’Electricité (CIE). Starting January 1, 2025, the deal will ensure a steady energy supply via the CLSG Transmission Line, with provisions for additional electricity procurement to meet growing demand. This partnership, set to be formally signed in late January, is pivotal for mitigating dry-season outages and strengthening Liberia’s energy reliability.

LEC’s combined efforts reflect its commitment to addressing operational challenges while securing resources to power the nation. The public is encouraged to support these initiatives by reporting power theft and staying informed on developments as Liberia’s energy landscape evolves.
