Broad Street, Monrovia – The Unity Party (UP), Liberia’s governing party, has issued a strong statement condemning the increasing and unauthorized use of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s portrait on various items, including billboards, coffee mugs, clothing, and event memorabilia. The Party asserts that such practices undermine its commitment to integrity and professionalism in governance.
In a press release issued today signed by Lansana Pawenneh Fofana,
National Assistant Secretary General for Press, Publicity & Outreach, the Unity Party expressed grave concerns over what it called “sycophantic glorification” of the presidency. The Party warned against a resurgence of practices reminiscent of past administrations that prioritized personality cults over national progress.
“The President firmly disapproves of using his image to signify loyalty or gratitude for personal or institutional favors,” the release stated. “Such actions contradict the principles of governance championed by the Unity Party.”
The UP emphasized that the presidency is not an imperial institution and called for an immediate cessation of unauthorized uses of President Boakai’s likeness. The Party reminded citizens, officials, and government institutions to use the President’s image only in official state events or government-endorsed initiatives, such as diplomatic engagements and programs promoting national development.
A Warning Against Public Adulation
Without naming specific individuals or organizations, the Unity Party warned that it would not hesitate to publicly address continued misuse of the President’s image. This warning comes as Liberia marks the end of President Boakai’s first year in office, a period the Party hailed as a turning point in the country’s developmental trajectory.
Unity Party’s Governance Philosophy
The Unity Party reaffirmed its commitment to a governance philosophy rooted in humility, integrity, and prioritizing Liberia’s national interests. By distancing itself from excessive adulation, the Party seeks to foster a culture of accountability and professionalism within public service.
“We urge all Partisans and the public to align their support with the President’s developmental agenda, focusing on actions that drive progress rather than practices that distract from it,” the statement read.
As Liberia continues its journey toward sustainable development, the Unity Party called on all stakeholders to uphold these principles, ensuring the nation remains on a path to greatness.
