The Minister of Commerce and Industry, Magdalene Ellen Dagoseh, is urging companies operating within the Monrovia Industrial Park (MIP) to strengthen workplace safety following a tragic explosion at Sethi Brothers’ Steel Factory that claimed the life of an employee.
During an on-site assessment visit, Minister Dagoseh expressed serious concern over the recent incident involving an oxygen tank explosion. She emphasized that while the government values the job opportunities being created by businesses at the MIP, it will not tolerate compromises when it comes to the safety of workers and nearby residents.
“The loss of life is always a painful matter. We came here right after the incident, and we’re back again not only to express sympathy but also to reinforce the importance of safety,” the Minister said. “There is a clear need for stronger safety protocols to prevent such tragedies in the future.”
She extended the Ministry’s condolences to the management of Sethi Brothers and the family of the deceased employee. At the same time, she stressed that companies must take a proactive approach in preventing workplace hazards.
Minister Dagoseh also used the visit to remind all businesses within the park of their corporate social responsibilities (CSR). She noted that while their operations contribute significantly to employment and the economy, maintaining a clean environment and giving back to the community should not be overlooked.
“CSR is not just a checkbox—it’s about making a lasting impact in the communities where you operate. Clean surroundings and community support are just as important as profits,” she stated.
Responding to the Minister’s concerns, company representatives expressed gratitude for the visit and pledged to take the necessary steps to enhance safety measures. They also welcomed the call for continued collaboration with the Ministry to ensure a safe and responsible business environment.
The visit underscores the government’s commitment to fostering industrial growth while ensuring that human lives and community welfare remain top priorities.
