Capitol Hill, Monrovia – In a fiery Facebook post, embattled House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa hit back at Vice President Jeremiah Koung, accusing him of spreading “distorted and inaccurate” claims during a live appearance on Spoon TV. The Vice President’s remarks, Koffa alleged, misrepresented discussions surrounding his resignation and revealed deeper political maneuvers within Liberia’s ongoing legislative crisis.
Koffa Denies Resignation Talks
Dismissing allegations that he negotiated with Vice President Koung or President Joseph Boakai to step down, Koffa reaffirmed his stance on restoring “legislative normalcy.” He outlined his demands:
Lifting Illegal Suspensions of lawmakers.
Restoring Committee Leadership to their rightful chairs.
Returning to the legislative chambers for open discussions on all issues, including grievances.
Koffa claimed the Vice President had proposed a deal involving a “white ballot” for Richard Koon as Speaker, budget approval, and post-speakership committee allocations. “I rejected all that,” Koffa wrote, adding that no agreement was reached.
Accusations Fly
In a sharp rebuke, Koffa accused Vice President Koung of being the “principal mastermind” behind what he described as an unconstitutional power grab. He also criticized the Executive Branch for ignoring the rule of law, referencing a controversial Justice Ministry opinion that, according to him, aligned with the Vice President’s agenda.
A Defiant Stand
Despite mounting pressure, Koffa vowed to remain firm in his commitment to the law and the Constitution. “The executive can continue to ignore the rule of law, but I will not waver,” he declared, signaling a prolonged standoff between rival factions in the government.
Koffa’s explosive statement has added fuel to an already volatile political climate, intensifying the debate over Liberia’s legislative crisis and raising questions about the Unity Party-led administration’s commitment to democratic principles.
