Monrovia, Liberia –The ruling Unity Party (UP) has taken a tough stance on discipline, suspending 25 members of its National Executive Committee (NEC), including prominent figures such as Richard Koon, Senator Nya D. Twayen, Jr., and Atty. Kula B. Fofana, for what it described as “persistent delinquency” in carrying out their party duties.
The decision, reached during a special sitting on September 13, 2025, mandates that each suspended official faces a one-month suspension and a US$1,000 fine, payable directly into the party’s account. Failure to comply within the timeframe, the party warned, will result in expulsion from the NEC.
“These acts of noncompliance and absenteeism represent complacency and a betrayal of the trust reposed in them,” the UP said in its resolution, citing Articles 19 and 16 (4) of the party’s constitution.
Big Names Hit with Suspension
The high-profile list of suspended officials reads like a who’s who in Liberian politics. It includes:
Sen. Nya D. Twayen, Jr. of Nimba County
Hon. Richard Koon, Montserrado County lawmaker
Atty. Kula B. Fofana, a prominent youth and women’s rights advocate
Hon. Wilmot J.M. Paye, former UP National Chairman
Cllr. Bushuben M. Keita
Dr. Louise Kpoto
Hon. Augustine K. Ngafuan, among others.
Also affected are lawmakers from Bomi, Lofa, and Sinoe counties, including Hon. J. Obadiah Varney, Hon. Mannah B. Johnson, and Hon. Harrison O. Kai.
Financial Boost for the Party
With 25 NEC members fined US\$1,000 each, the party stands to collect more than US\$25,000 from the disciplinary action. Insiders suggest this could also serve as a strategic financial cushion as the party gears up for upcoming political activities.
Dues Warning to Others
In addition to the suspensions, the UP cautioned all delinquent dues-paying members to settle their arrears within one month or risk further penalties. The party emphasized that its sustainability depends heavily on dues and contributions from members.
Party Reassures Public
Despite the sweeping sanctions, the UP reassured its supporters and the public of its commitment to discipline, unity, and collective responsibility in strengthening the party’s institutional framework.
