Paynesville City – In a bold move aimed at advancing justice and accountability, the Executive Director of the Community Watch Forum (CWF), Nyenati Kaffey Sr., has vowed to ensure the successful establishment of the Office of War and Economic Crimes Courts in Liberia.
Director Kaffey made the disclosure during the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between his institution and the Office of the War and Economic Crimes Courts in Monrovia, describing the agreement as a pivotal step towards addressing impunity and promoting the rule of law in the country.
The CWF Executive Director emphasized the urgent need for specialized courts to tackle increasing concerns surrounding war crimes and economic offenses.
“The establishment of these courts is not just a legal necessity; it is a moral imperative,” he stated.
“We owe it to the victims and the communities affected by these heinous acts to create a judicial framework that ensures justice and accountability.”
The proposal for war and economic crimes courts has gained momentum amidst growing calls for justice from civil society organizations and community leaders.
For his part, the Executive Director of the Office of War and Economic Crimes Courts, Cllr. Jallah Barbu, outlined a comprehensive plan to collaborate with government officials, legal experts, and international partners to lay the groundwork for these courts.
“Establishing these courts will require a concerted effort from all stakeholders. We are committed to engaging with the government to secure the necessary legal and institutional frameworks. Additionally, we will seek support from international organizations to ensure that these courts operate with the highest standards of fairness and transparency,” said Cllr. Barbu.
