Congo Town, Monrovia – Augustus Janga Kowo, Chairman of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), firmly condemned Deputy Speaker Thomas Fallah and several CDC lawmakers for their defiance against the party’s leadership and former President George Manneh Weah. Kowo accused these lawmakers of undermining the authority of Speaker J. Fonati Koffa, suggesting that their actions were influenced by the opposition United Party (UP) in a bid to destabilize the CDC.

Kowo asserted that these disruptive schemes would ultimately fail, expressing confidence that the CDC would emerge from the situation even stronger. “We are closely monitoring the situation,” he stated, emphasizing the party’s commitment to its principles.

The statement highlighted broader concerns about the state of Liberian democracy, warning that excessive executive influence could jeopardize the functions of the legislature and judiciary, thus undermining the essential checks and balances. Kowo pointed to the UP government’s alleged undemocratic practices, including disrespect for Supreme Court rulings and violations of human rights.

Kowo also called for a national conversation on the need to strengthen political parties’ powers over their elected members, noting the current limitations in holding legislators accountable for their actions.

In closing, he urged all CDC partisans to remain calm as the party consults with stakeholders to determine its next steps in response to the internal conflict. The CDC leadership continues to navigate these challenges as it seeks to maintain its unity and integrity amidst rising tensions.
