The Bank of Ghana has issued a press release to clarify recent misinformation circulating on social media about the transfer of uncirculated banknotes to the Central Bank of Liberia. The statement aims to correct public misunderstandings regarding the movement of these banknotes, which have been inaccurately portrayed in online discussions.
In a swift response the BOG said Since 2004, it has maintained a currency transfer arrangement with the Central Bank of Liberia. Under this agreement, the Bank of Ghana receives and holds imported currency on behalf of Liberia before re-exporting it to Monrovia. The uncirculated banknotes referenced in recent social media posts are part of this established arrangement.
The Bank of Ghana emphasized that all logistical and security protocols for this currency transfer are carefully managed. The process includes notifying relevant stakeholders of the entry and exit of consignments related to the arrangement. The bank expressed regret that this routine administrative matter had been misrepresented and sensationalized.
The press release also addressed concerns raised by a lawmaker who circulated a procedural clearance letter related to the currency transfer. The Bank of Ghana denounced this as an attempt to mislead the public and suggested that such actions undermine the established trust between the two countries.
The Bank of Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to upholding high standards in currency management and maintaining its reputation as a reliable institution. The bank highlighted its sophisticated currency operations and its ongoing support to peer countries as part of international best practices.
