“A PhD. Prank?” Renown Liberian Media Personality, Educator Pounder over Newly Launched PhD Program at UL

Following the Official Launch of Liberia’s First Doctoral Programs at the University of Liberia a renown Liberian media personality and educator D. Adams Togbah writes.

A PhD. Prank?

Tell me, is this just a prank?
A PhD. program, they now flank,
When schools with walls about to fall,
Can’t even teach the basics at all.

No libraries where minds can grow,
No labs for science’s spark to show,
Computers? A dream in the dust,
Textbooks a luxury, not a must.

Students still lug their chairs each day,
While scholars squabble, have their say,
And internet? A fleeting breeze,
Gone as fast as the morning leaves.

Yet here we stand, a bold decree—
A doctorate! What a sight to see.
But pray, who’ll teach these shining minds,
When knowledge gaps in ranks we find?

Perhaps it’s not for learning’s sake,
But rather, for appearances to make.
Give those with cloudy pasts their robes,
To hide the truth behind those folds.

So I ask, in earnest plea,
Is this progress, or mockery?
A PhD. program on shaky ground,
While the real foundation’s nowhere found.

A prank, I hope, but if it’s real,
What will our future scholars feel?
Degrees on paper, but no light,
To guide their path from wrong to right.

Fix the cracks, rebuild the core,
Before this PhD. opens its door.
Or else we’ll laugh, but through our tears,
At a joke that’s stretched for years.
