A New Wave for Liberia: Klay Hatchery Breaks Ground to Boost Aquaculture and Empower Farmers

Today marked a significant milestone for Liberia’s aquaculture industry as ground was officially broken at the Klay Hatchery site in Bomi County. This ambitious project is set to revolutionize fish farming across the nation, providing a modern, privately-operated hatchery that will serve as a lifeline for local inland fisheries.

Once operational, the hatchery will focus on producing improved breeds of tilapia and catfish—two vital species for Liberian farmers. NaFAA, the sector’s regulatory body, will continue to provide technical support while partnering with the Central Agricultural Research Institute (CARI) to ensure sustainable fish production.

This initiative, backed by the World Bank and other development partners, aims to reduce fish imports, improve local production, and create economic opportunities in rural communities.

NaFAA’s leadership expressed gratitude to the World Bank, represented by Country Manager Georgia Wallen, for its steadfast support. Special recognition was also given to the dedicated NaFAA team, whose tireless efforts are driving the sector’s transformation.

With Klay Hatchery on the horizon, Liberia is making waves towards a future of sustainable, locally-driven aquaculture.
