House Targets Freeport Fees as Businesses Cry Foul

MONROVIA – The House of Representatives has opened a public probe into the Freeport of Monrovia, questioning why import costs keep climbing under a web of fees.

The Special Committee, chaired by Hon. Musa Hassan Bility, held its first hearing Wednesday, June 11, 2026, after Rep. J. Clarence T. Banks flagged “excessive charges” that he says squeeze businesses and consumers. Lawmakers grilled the National Port Authority, LRA, GTMS, MedTech, APM Terminal, shipping lines, and customs brokers over fee structures and operational delays.

Importers have long warned that overlapping charges at Liberia’s main seaport make goods more expensive and hurt competitiveness. The committee says it will test whether current practices by GTMS, MedTech and other operators comply with the law and serve the public interest.

Bility promised a transparent review before submitting findings and recommendations to plenary for possible action. The hearing resumes Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
