‎UL Faculty Votes to Halt All Academic Activities Over Unresolved Grievances

Monrovia, Liberia – Faculty members at the University of Liberia (UL) have voted unanimously to suspend all academic activities across the institution, citing long-standing unresolved issues affecting their welfare.

‎The decision was reached Friday during an Emergency General Assembly (EGA) convened by the University of Liberia Faculty Association (ULFA) on the Capitol Hill campus.

‎According to ULFA, the strike action stems from multiple unaddressed concerns, including poor sanitary conditions, delayed faculty promotions, salary disparities, lack of social security, and challenges affecting colleagues on study leave. Faculty also raised alarms over the slow pace of campus renovations and the administration’s failure to settle overdue payments for overload and vacation school salaries.

‎“These are issues we have raised repeatedly, but they remain unresolved. Until a negotiated Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) is signed by UL Administration, the Government of Liberia, and ULFA, we will not return to classes,” the association stated.

‎The move effectively halts all teaching and academic programs at UL, impacting thousands of students across the Capitol Hill and other campuses.

‎ULFA is demanding immediate dialogue and binding commitments from both the university administration and the government to address what they describe as “outstanding welfare and institutional challenges.”

‎As the shutdown takes effect, students and the wider academic community now await the response of the UL administration and the government.
