Monrovia, Liberia – In a significant development, Deputy Speaker Cllr. J. Fonati Koffi has secured the endorsement of at least forty lawmakers during a Representative retreat over the weekend. The Ground Kru County district two lawmaker, reportedly outgoing Deputy Speaker of the 54th legislature, received backing from a diverse group of colleagues, including first-time lawmakers, for his bid for the Speakership in the upcoming 55th legislature.
Cllr. Koffa, affiliated with the outgoing ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), has garnered support not only from within his party but also from representatives of the Unity Party. Speaking to the press after the retreat on Sunday, November 26, 2023, Deputy Speaker Koffa expressed explicit confidence in assuming the Speakership role come January. He emphasized the value he brings to the table with his legislative experience, legal expertise, and a decade of government service.
Lawmakers endorsing Deputy Speaker Koffa’s Speakership bid include notable figures such as J. Melvin Cole (CDC) of Bong County district three, Edward P. Flomo (CDC) of Montserrado district, Augustine B. Chiewolo (Unity Party) of Lofa County district five, Abu Bannah Kamara (CDC) of Montserrado district 15, Bender Blue Benson (CDC) of Montserrado district 17, and Representative-elect Hon. Michael M. Thomas from Montserrado County district four.
The race for the Speakership of the 55th legislature involves three prominent members of the House of Representatives, including Cllr. J Fonati Koffi (CDC), Musa Hassan Bility (CPP) of Nimba County district seven, and Richard Nagbe Koon (Unity Party) of Montserrado County district eleven. The position became vacant after Maryland’s Bhofal Chambers was defeated in the October 2023 general presidential and legislative elections, creating an opportunity for new leadership in the lower house.
