Monrovia — President Joseph Boakai said he would “never ever” dedicate small projects. One week later, he dedicated a latrine.
In 2024 at Bopolu, Gbarpolu County, Boakai launched a water system and made a big promise:
“I will never ever go to dedicate a hand pump. We have passed that phase. Everything we are doing here should have happened 100 years ago.”
He said his government would focus on “impactful and substantial projects” only.
But on Friday, the President somersaulted.
He went to ELWA Joebar Market in Paynesville to dedicate a _modern public latrine_ built by NOCAL.
The government called it “improved sanitation and public health.”
Critics called it hypocrisy.
Social media erupted. People asked: If a hand pump is too small to dedicate, why is a toilet not?
One user wrote: _“We passed hand pumps, but we didn’t pass latrines?”_
The President’s office says the latrine is part of public-private partnerships for a “cleaner, healthier” Liberia.
For many Liberians, it just looks like another broken promise.
