MONROVIA — The fight against drugs in Liberia has turned into a political fight over who started it.
CDC Secretary General Jefferson Koijee has rejected claims from the Boakai administration that cocaine importation increased during the Weah government. Instead, Koijee says the problem began 12 years ago under the Unity Party.
Speaking for “LIBERIA’S PATRIOTS,” Koijee called statements by Executive Protection Service Director Sam Gaye “reckless and legally baseless.” Gaye had suggested that Liberia’s cocaine trafficking problem started under the CDC government in 2022.
Koijee said that is a “desperate distraction.” He pointed to two old reports to back his claim. In 2013, the UK Guardian reported that presidential motorcade commander Perry Dolo was arrested with three other security officers for trafficking narcotics from Sierra Leone into Liberia. That was during Joseph Boakai’s time as Vice President under the Unity Party.
He also cited a 2015 Guardian investigation. It reported a US DEA sting in Monrovia that led to the arrest of a Colombian drug lord and the discovery of a cocaine processing lab downtown, guarded by men with AK-47s. That too, Koijee said, happened under Unity Party rule.
“That period marks the documented origin of transnational cocaine trafficking infrastructure in Liberia,” Koijee stated. “History does not support Director Gaye’s revisionism, and Liberians should not be asked to forget it.”
Koijee said this is not about CDC vs Unity Party. “Liberia’s survival matters more than any party’s propaganda. It is about refusing to let anyone, from any side, rewrite the record to escape accountability.”
Both sides now agree on one thing: cocaine is a serious problem. But they cannot agree on when it started or who is to blame.
