The Government of the People’s Republic of China has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cooperation with Liberia in the mining and energy sectors, with focus on investment, mineral processing and renewable energy development.

Chinese Ambassador to Liberia, Yin Chengwu, made the pledge on Wednesday while speaking at the Energy Conference 2026 in Monrovia. He outlined four key priority areas for partnership aimed at enhancing local industries, creating jobs and ensuring sustainable development of Liberia’s natural resources.

Ambassador Yin said China is prepared to support Liberia through technical expertise, financing opportunities, technology transfer and green energy solutions to help translate the country’s vast mineral wealth into tangible economic benefits for its people.

He described mining as a central pillar of Liberia’s economy, noting its potential to increase government revenue, attract foreign direct investment, generate employment and drive broader economic transformation.

The Chinese envoy commended President Joseph Boakai’s ARREST Agenda for prioritizing the mining sector and aligning natural resource management with national development goals.

Yin recalled a comprehensive mineral resource survey funded by China several years ago, which he described as the most extensive scientific investigation undertaken in Liberia in over five decades. According to him, the survey confirmed deposits of iron ore, gold, diamonds, lithium, cobalt, nickel and other strategic minerals.

He emphasized that with responsible investment, improved infrastructure, modern technology and effective management, Liberia is well positioned to maximize returns from its resource endowment.

Ambassador Yin stressed the need for increased in-country mineral processing and stronger linkages between mining, energy, infrastructure and other productive sectors to promote value addition and economic diversification.

He outlined four pillars for enhanced China-Liberia cooperation: mineral resource governance and skills development; mining investment and industrial value addition; energy cooperation and green technology; and responsible and sustainable mining.

The Ambassador noted that Chinese companies operating in Bong and Bomi East have already contributed to the mining sector by creating over 500 jobs for Liberians and supporting infrastructure development, including roads and port facilities.

On energy, Yin said China is ready to explore cooperation in solar, wind and hydropower to expand access to electricity and support industrial growth.

Regarding environmental sustainability, he advocated for smart mining, clean smelting, mine site restoration and enhanced corporate social responsibility, while expressing support for Liberia’s efforts to combat illegal mining.

He stressed that the success of mining cooperation should be measured by its lasting impact on local communities and called for a stable, transparent and equitable investment environment to attract responsible investors.

Ambassador Yin reaffirmed China’s readiness to work with Liberia and other international partners to ensure that Liberia’s mineral wealth becomes a catalyst for industrialization, economic diversification and social development if managed sustainably.

He called on participants at the conference to build stronger partnerships aimed at transforming Liberia’s natural resources into lasting prosperity for its citizens.
