Marshall, Liberia – In a move set to bolster Liberia’s maritime education sector, United States Ambassador to Liberia, Mark C. Toner, today paid a courtesy visit to the Liberia Maritime Training Institute (LMTI). The visit comes amid plans to upgrade the institution to Bachelor’s degree level, further solidifying its role in training highly skilled maritime professionals.
Ambassador Toner toured LMTI’s state-of-the-art facilities, engaged with cadets, and observed ongoing classes and a military drill exercise showcasing the discipline instilled in students. His visit was part of a broader effort to explore potential collaborations aimed at enhancing LMTI’s academic standing and expanding its infrastructure to accommodate a growing student population.
Strengthening Maritime Education and Security
During discussions, Commissioner/CEO of the Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA), Cllr. Neto Zarzar Lighe Sr., expressed appreciation for the United States’ unwavering support in Liberia’s maritime sector. He underscored the importance of international partnerships in safeguarding maritime security, particularly in the fight against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
“We hope to continue our collaboration, especially with the U.S. Coast Guard and other international partners, to strengthen maritime security and education,” Commissioner Lighe emphasized.
U.S. Commitment to Maritime Excellence
Ambassador Toner commended LMTI’s commitment to discipline and academic excellence, stressing the importance of quality maritime education for Liberia’s economic growth.
“What shines through is commitment to excellence and discipline, which are essential for success in life and career. The cadets here are outstanding ambassadors for Liberia, and the dedication of the administration is evident,” he remarked.
A Growing Force in Global Maritime Standards
Representing the institution, LMTI Board Chairman Abraham Avi Zaidenberg reaffirmed the institute’s dedication to upholding global maritime standards. He highlighted LMTI’s achievements, noting that 72 cadets have successfully graduated, many of whom are now employed on international vessels and offshore industries.
“The recent graduation of our first batch of Marine Engineer Officers is a milestone for Liberia’s maritime future,” Zaidenberg added.
