Supreme Court Summons Education Ministry Officials Over Writ of Prohibition

Monrovia, Liberia – The Supreme Court of Liberia has taken a significant step in addressing grievances within the Ministry of Education. By directive of Associate Justice Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay Sr., officials of the Ministry of Education, including Minister Dr. Jarson M. Jallah and the Deputy Minister for Instruction, have been summoned to appear before the court on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at 10:00 a.m.

The directive stems from a petition for a writ of prohibition filed by the Aggrieved Education Officers (EOs), represented by their spokesperson, Attorney Steven Toe. The officers allege injustices within the ministry and are seeking the court’s intervention to halt certain administrative actions they believe are detrimental to their rights and duties.

The communication, signed by Cllr. Sam Mamulu, Clerk of the Supreme Court, indicates that the conference will deliberate on the concerns raised by the petitioners and provide an opportunity for both parties to present their arguments.

The involvement of the Independent National Commission on Human Rights (INCHR), chaired by Counselor T. Dempster Brown, underscores the potential human rights implications of the case. Counselor Brown has been officially notified of the proceedings, signaling the broader significance of the dispute.

This case highlights growing tensions within Liberia’s education sector, as aggrieved officers push for accountability and transparency from ministry leadership. The outcome of the conference could set a precedent for addressing disputes within government institutions.
