NOCAL Response to Luxury Vehicle Purchase & Corruption Claims

By: Alphanso G. Kalama;

Monrovia, Liberia– The National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL) has found itself at the center of controversy following allegations that it purchased luxury vehicles worth US$55,000 each for its Vice Presidents, exceeding the government’s spending limit.

In a statement released on February 16, 2025, NOCAL strongly denied these accusations, calling them “factually inaccurate and misleading.” The company clarified that the vehicles, KIA Seltos models, were purchased at US$32,500 each, well below the National Budget threshold of US$45,000. NOCAL also dismissed claims that the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) had already implicated its executives in financial mismanagement, emphasizing that the investigation is still ongoing and no conclusions have been reached.

Despite these reassurances, public skepticism remains high, with critics demanding full transparency and independent audits. As calls for accountability grow, all eyes are now on the LACC’s final report, which could either vindicate or expose corruption within NOCAL
