Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, who played a crucial role in the club’s recent Serie A triumph, has been stripped of his iconic number 9 jersey, which has been reassigned to new signing Romelu Lukaku. This move follows a tumultuous summer filled with transfer speculation and reported discord between the Nigerian striker and the club’s management.

Osimhen’s future at Napoli became uncertain after a series of high-profile transfer bids. Despite interest from Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal and England’s Chelsea, Osimhen remains at Napoli, a scenario that has left many surprised. According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the striker’s continued presence at the club is a result of failed negotiations with Al Ahli, who were initially set to pay £67 million but withdrew when Napoli’s demands increased. Al Ahli subsequently acquired Brentford’s Ivan Toney for £40 million.

New Napoli manager Antonio Conte, familiar with Lukaku from their time together at Inter Milan, appears to favor the Belgian striker over Osimhen. This preference has been a significant factor in the decision to reassign the number 9 shirt to Lukaku.

Osimhen, who had been named African Footballer of the Year and ranked 8th in the Ballon d’Or, now faces an uncertain future. Reports suggest he might be sidelined until January, when the transfer window reopens. The situation has been further complicated by public tensions, including a controversial video from Napoli’s official TikTok account perceived as disrespectful to the player.

Despite these challenges, Osimhen extended his contract with Napoli until 2026, signaling his commitment to the club amid the ongoing drama.
