Monrovia, Liberia – The Mano River Union Youth Parliament, Liberia Chapter (MRUYP-LC), has taken a bold stride toward democratic renewal by establishing an Independent Elections Commission to oversee its upcoming county-wide elections.
Speaking at a weekend news conference, Speaker of the 4th Parliament, Daniel Nama Nills, said the move marks the official start of the transition to the 5th Parliament and aligns with Rule 35(a) of the 2024 revised statutes, which mandates a four-year parliamentary tenure followed by general elections.
The upcoming elections will see the selection of 30 parliamentarians—two from each of Liberia’s 15 counties—aimed at strengthening youth representation and participation in governance. According to Nills, the transition seeks to deepen inclusivity, transparency, and accountability within the youth parliament’s democratic framework.
In compliance with Rule 35(b), Nills named the newly appointed Independent Elections Commission, which will organize and supervise the elections across the country. The commission comprises Amb. Varney V. Sheriff as Chairperson, Ms. Adela C.A. Johnson as Co-chair, and Adonis W. Yormie as Secretary.
“These individuals were chosen for their wealth of experience in peacebuilding, grassroots leadership, and their understanding of electoral processes,” Nills emphasized, noting that their expertise will be vital to ensuring a credible and fair election.
He called on all youth stakeholders, aspirants, and the public to fully support the Commission as it carries out its duties to safeguard the democratic integrity of the MRU Youth Parliament.
“This is a defining moment for youth democracy in Liberia,” Nills said. “It’s not just about elections—it’s about empowering young people to lead with integrity and purpose.”
