Paynesville, Montserrado – Liberian media professionals are being urged to amplify advocacy efforts for the timely passage of the Public Health Bill, which remains under review by the Senate. The bill, viewed as a critical tool to enhance public health delivery and protect health rights for all citizens, has been pending approval since 2022.

A media engagement workshop, organized by Sister Aid Liberia Inc. on January 17, 2025, in Paynesville, highlighted the media’s pivotal role in raising awareness and fostering public and legislative support for the bill. The event equipped journalists with advocacy strategies and insights into key aspects of the bill, such as sexual reproductive health rights (SRHR) and structural reforms in the health sector.

Titus B. Pakalah, Chairperson of SRHR Champions – Liberia, noted that despite prior approval by the lower House, the bill has remained stalled in the Senate Health Committee. He emphasized the need for sustained collaboration among media practitioners, civil society organizations (CSOs), and other stakeholders to push for its passage.

“As you know, the Public Health Bill has been stuck at the Senate Health Committee since 2022. While remarkable advocacy efforts have been made at the community and policy levels, it is now critical to engage the media, CSOs, and multi-sectoral groups to achieve a collective outcome,” Pakalah stated. He also stressed the importance of commitment from traditional leaders and strategic communication to move the process forward.

The bill, according to Theophilus G. Fayiah, President of the Liberia National Physician Assistant Association, has far-reaching implications for Liberia’s healthcare system. “The proposed legislation addresses crucial areas such as the regulation of controlled substances, the enhancement of sexual reproductive health rights, and the strengthening of healthcare services across the nation,” Fayiah explained.

The workshop concluded with a call to action for unified efforts to ensure the bill’s passage. Advocates believe its enactment will not only promote transparency and accountability but also transform Liberia’s health sector for the better.
