Monrovia, Liberia– The Liberia National Police (LNP) has launched a rapid substance and drug testing program for its Police Support Unit (PSU) officers, a bold initiative aimed at fostering a drug-free police force and strengthening public trust in law enforcement.
The testing, which began on Friday, December 13, 2024, at LNP Headquarters, is being conducted in collaboration with Madina Laboratory and Diagnostics Center. Over 100 PSU officers are being screened in the program’s initial phase, with plans to expand testing to other units, including patrol officers who interact directly with the public.
Speaking on the significance of the initiative, Joe Daweah, Administrator of Madina Laboratory and Diagnostics Center, highlighted its dual purpose. “The objective of the testing is not only to identify and address substance use within the LNP but also to provide necessary support to those in need,” he explained. Officers who test positive will receive comprehensive follow-up care, including psychosocial support, to address underlying issues and facilitate rehabilitation.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Fitzgerald T. M. Biago, Chief of Human Resources of the LNP, emphasized that the program reflects a broader effort to uphold the integrity of the police force.
“The testing is a holistic approach aimed at supporting the well-being of our officers while maintaining the integrity and professionalism of the police force,” Biago said. “A drug-free police force is crucial for the effective and trustworthy performance of the duties of the LNP.”
The program underscores the LNP’s commitment to maintaining high standards of conduct among officers tasked with protecting public safety. By prioritizing officer well-being and addressing substance abuse issues, the LNP aims to foster greater accountability and professionalism within its ranks.
The initiative also signals a proactive step toward rebuilding public confidence in the police force. With allegations of misconduct and substance abuse having previously tarnished law enforcement’s reputation, this program seeks to reassure the public of the LNP’s dedication to reform and transparency.
As the testing expands to include more officers, the LNP hopes to set a precedent for accountability and professionalism in law enforcement, serving as a model for similar initiatives in the region.
