HARBEL, Margibi County — A tragic incident unfolded on Friday, August 23, 2024, near the Firestone Hydro community, where nine individuals, including local journalist Nathan Harris, are reported missing after a failed rescue attempt.

The distressing event occurred around 2 p.m. when Harris, a journalist for Farmington FM, was struggling in the Farmington River. Eight others who attempted to rescue him are also feared missing. Amadu Bah, a local resident, broadcasted an urgent SOS call on Facebook, highlighting the perilous conditions of the river, exacerbated by recent heavy rainfall.

Harris, known for his work with Farmington FM—a radio station linked to Margibi’s second electoral district representative, Ivar Jones—was reportedly caught in the river’s strong current. The exact cause of his predicament remains unclear. The area where the incident occurred, near the hydroelectric facility that powers Firestone, is notorious for its dangerous tides, particularly during this season.

As search and rescue efforts continue, community members and local authorities are grappling with the challenging conditions. The situation remains dire, with hopes fading as efforts to locate the missing individuals persist.
