Monrovia, Liberia – Nimba County Representative Taa Wongbe has strongly criticized fellow lawmaker Representative Samuel Kogar for allegedly threatening a journalist during a recent interview, labeling the incident as damaging to the reputation of both Nimba County and the Liberian Legislature.

In a public statement, Representative Wongbe expressed disappointment over Rep. Kogar’s behavior during an exchange with journalist Julius Jeh, calling it “deeply troubling” and unbefitting of a three-term lawmaker.

“It is deeply unfortunate that individuals like Representative Samuel Kogar continue to tarnish the reputation of Nimba in the public eye,” Wongbe wrote. “His actions perpetuate negative stereotypes of our people and bring disrepute to the legislature.”

The incident reportedly occurred during a discussion about the current tensions within the House of Representatives, where journalist Jeh provided what he described as a balanced analysis. According to Wongbe, Kogar’s reaction undermines the values of accountability and transparency that should define public service.

In an effort to restore public trust, Wongbe extended a public apology to the journalist. “To journalist Julius Jeh, I want to extend a public apology for the unacceptable behavior displayed by Rep. Kogar. This does not reflect the principles of good leadership that we should strive for,” Wongbe stated.

The incident has sparked conversations about press freedom and the responsibility of lawmakers to engage constructively with the media. Many observers view the exchange as part of a broader challenge facing Liberia’s political landscape, where tensions and personal attacks often overshadow critical discussions on governance.

As calls grow for accountability within the legislature, Rep. Wongbe’s statement underscores the need for leaders to exemplify the principles of democracy and respect for free speech. The broader public and media stakeholders are now awaiting further action or response from Rep. Kogar regarding the allegations.

This controversy marks another moment of reckoning for Liberia’s political leadership, as citizens demand greater integrity and professionalism from those elected to serve.
