Monrovia, Liberia – The United States Embassy in Monrovia has called for calm and dialogue as tensions rise on Capitol Hill, urging all parties involved in Liberia’s political processes to uphold the principles of democracy, transparency, and the rule of law.

In a statement released today December 13, 2024, the Embassy emphasized the importance of peaceful political engagement, noting the Liberian people’s expectation for their leaders to prioritize democracy and unity.

“The United States wants to see Liberia’s political processes play out peacefully and with respect for the rule of law,” the statement read. “Liberians expect their leaders to uphold democracy and its practices, including open and transparent political processes and peaceful debate.”

The Embassy further urged all parties to maintain peace and avoid actions that could undermine the nation’s stability. Highlighting the dangers of violence, the U.S. Embassy stressed that such actions serve no one’s interest and called on leaders to exhibit unity and compromise.

“Violence is never the answer, and it serves no one’s interest. We strongly urge both sides to reach a compromise, so the important work of the legislature can continue for the Liberian people,” the statement added.

The ongoing situation has sparked concerns about potential disruptions to the legislative process, with many citizens watching closely as their leaders navigate the challenges. The Embassy’s statement also encouraged reflection and resilience during challenging times, pointing out that maintaining a democracy requires learning from setbacks and fostering peaceful solutions.

“Maintaining a democracy is never easy, and there will certainly be tough times, but the key is learning from the missteps and remaining steadfast in knowing there is no place nor benefit to resorting to violence,” the statement continued.

Reaffirming confidence in Liberia’s political stakeholders, the Embassy expressed optimism that differences among political parties and individuals can be resolved through peaceful dialogue for the benefit of the nation.

This call for calm comes amid heightened scrutiny of the political landscape in Liberia, as citizens and international observers alike hope for constructive engagement to address the country’s pressing issues.
