Congo Town, Monrovia – The National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) has launched an investigation into reports of a pox-like disease affecting inmates in a prison in Greenville, Sinoe County.

This development comes amid heightened concern due to the ongoing global Mpox outbreak to which Liberia has already been responding.

County and District Surveillance Officers have been mobilized to conduct epidemiological assessments and investigations.

This includes identifying suspected cases, evaluating symptoms, and determining the scope of the outbreak. According to NPHIL, specimens will be collected and sent to the National Reference Laboratory for testing to identify the pathogen and its biomolecular characteristics.

In an official statement, NPHIL urged the public to remain calm while investigations continue. “We admonish the public not to panic but to contact NPHIL for accurate information and avoid speculative rumors.

Updates will be communicated as new information becomes available,” said Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan, Director-General of NPHIL.

The institute emphasized the importance of adhering to sanitary measures and avoiding unnecessary physical contact while awaiting further updates.

NPHIL has assured that any findings from the ongoing investigation will be promptly shared to safeguard public health.

This report comes as Liberia strengthens its health surveillance systems to manage both domestic and international health threats. The public is advised to stay informed through official NPHIL channels.
