Shanghai, China – Liberia’s Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Liberia Maritime Authority has praised China’s growing leadership in the global shipping industry, describing the Asian powerhouse as a “true friend” and a vital partner in driving inclusive maritime development.

‎Speaking at the 2025 North Bund Forum in Shanghai, the Liberian maritime chief extended deep appreciation to the Ministry of Transport of the People’s Republic of China and the Shanghai Municipal Government for the invitation to participate in the high-profile event that brought together global maritime leaders and policymakers.

‎He commended China for its unmatched contributions to global shipping through shipbuilding, modern port infrastructure, and maritime innovation, saying, “China continues to play a crucial leadership role on many issues confronting the global maritime sector. Its economy is a global public good on which the progress of many nations depends.”

‎The Liberian maritime head underscored the importance of the existing Maritime Transport Agreement between Liberia and China, highlighting that the partnership has strengthened cooperation in areas such as seafarer documentation, capacity building, and port access. “This agreement demonstrates China’s genuine effort to promote mutual growth and interconnected maritime development,” he said.

‎Addressing the theme, *“Collaborating for Sustainable Global Shipping and Aviation,”* the Commissioner emphasized that true sustainability in global shipping must be rooted in fairness and inclusivity. He called for global cooperation in achieving decarbonization without imposing economic hardship on developing nations.

‎“While Liberia remains committed to a decarbonized maritime sector, the transition must be equitable and inclusive. We cannot leave any country behind,” he warned, adding that many ports in developing nations remain unprepared for the costly shift to greener technologies.

‎He stressed that the maritime industry must prioritize certainty and stability, noting that “the sector cannot afford uncertainty or disruption.” The Liberian Maritime Authority, he added, supports consensus-building through international bodies like the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to ensure a unified global agenda.

‎Reaffirming Liberia’s commitment to its long-standing friendship with China, the Maritime CEO concluded: “China is a true friend, and Liberia remains firmly committed to the People’s Republic of China and the One China Policy. We look forward to deepening our cooperation for a fair, sustainable, and prosperous global maritime future.”
