LEC’s Management Transition Delays Tariff Proposal Submission

LEC’s Management Transition Delays Tariff Proposal Submission

By: Alphanso G. Kalama

The Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) has cited leadership transitions as the reason for withdrawing its tariff application submitted in October 2024. The Interim Management Team (IMT), appointed after the departure of the previous administration, has requested additional time to review and revise the proposal.

Following this request, the Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC) has granted LEC until January 31, 2025, to resubmit the tariff application. The extension comes with a three-month prolongation of the current tariff period, which will now expire on March 31, 2025. During this time, existing tariffs will remain unchanged in Montserrado, Margibi, Grand Cape Mount, and Bomi counties.

LERC Chairman Claude J. Katta emphasized the importance of meeting the new deadline, highlighting the critical role of the tariff-setting process in the regulation of Liberia’s electricity sector. He assured the public of LERC’s commitment to transparency, with plans to conduct stakeholder engagements and public consultations before any final decisions are made.

The current tariff rates for various customer categories are as follows:

Social Customers: US$0.15 per kilowatt-hour (no fixed charge)

Prepaid Residential Customers: US$0.24 per kilowatt-hour, monthly fixed charge of $2.48

Postpaid Residential Customers: US$0.24 per kilowatt-hour, monthly fixed charge of $4.47

Prepaid Non-Residential Customers: US$0.22 per kilowatt-hour, monthly fixed charge of $10.00

Postpaid Commercial Customers: US$0.22 per kilowatt-hour, monthly fixed charge of $12.00

Medium Voltage Customers: US$0.19 per kilowatt-hour, monthly fixed charge of $50.00

The IMT’s request reflects its focus on aligning the proposed tariff application with the current operational realities of the corporation, ensuring regulatory compliance and public interest. LERC’s decision to grant additional time underscores its commitment to fostering a stable and transparent energy sector in Liberia.
