Monrovia, Liberia – The Liberia Council of Churches (LCC) has issued a scathing condemnation of what it calls an “unbiblical and unlawful” act—an alleged same-sex marriage ceremony purportedly held at the historic S.T. Nagbe United Methodist Church in Monrovia.
Through its Chairman on Evangelism, Rev. Amminadab K. John, the LCC declared the incident a direct violation of the Holy Scriptures, the Liberian Constitution, and the nation’s moral heritage.
“This act undermines the moral and spiritual foundation upon which Liberia stands,” Rev. John said, citing passages from Genesis, Leviticus, and Romans to emphasize that marriage, by God’s design, is a sacred union between one man and one woman.
The LCC’s statement urged churches nationwide to reaffirm biblical teachings on marriage, pressed the government to enforce laws protecting moral order, and called on believers to pray for “repentance and restoration” for those who have strayed from God’s will.
In a development aimed at quelling public speculation, the LCC confirmed it had engaged Bishop Samuel J. Quire, head of the United Methodist Church in Liberia, who reaffirmed the denomination’s official stance against same-sex marriage, in line with its Book of Discipline and Articles of Faith.
The Council stressed the need to protect the unity of the Christian church in Liberia, warning against “teachings or practices that contradict biblical truth” and urging the public to resist being drawn into disorder over issues on which the Church’s position is already clear.
Quoting Psalm 33:12 – “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD” – the LCC called on Liberians to guard the spiritual and moral integrity of the country, vowing that “the Church in Liberia will never support any act that does not align with the Holy Scriptures.”
Founded to promote unity, evangelism, social justice, and national reconciliation, the LCC says it remains committed to safeguarding both the faith and the moral fabric of the nation.
