Monrovia, Liberia – The Federation of Liberian Youth (FLY) has issued an erratum to a press statement it released on December 18, 2024, clarifying and retracting an earlier claim regarding the actions of the Liberian National Police (LNP) during a protest. The initial statement, which condemned the LNP’s protest control methods, included a claim that live bullets had been used to disperse protesters. An independent investigation has since revealed that no live bullets were used, prompting FLY to declare the statement “absolutely inaccurate and misleading.”
In an official release, FLY extended its regret for the potential harm caused by the erroneous statement, particularly to the LNP, the Government of Liberia, and its development partners. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to promoting truth and accountability in its communication.
To address the matter, FLY announced administrative actions, including the suspension of the Secretariat and Communication Team members responsible for the statement. Mrs. Rosetta Fardolo has been appointed as Acting Head of Secretariat/Secretary General.
Additionally, FLY has named Mr. Augustine SM. Tamba as the new Chairman of its Board of Advisors. The organization praised Mr. Tamba for his exceptional leadership and dedication to youth development, describing his appointment as a “testimony to his fervent commitment to the advancement of youth empowerment in Liberia.”
The December 18 statement and its subsequent erratum serve as a reminder of the importance of upholding democratic values, accurate reporting, and the rule of law, FLY emphasized.
According to them, the move reflects FLY’s resolve to safeguard its credibility and ensure accountability, reinforcing its mission to champion the rights and development of Liberia’s youth.
