Former U.S. President and Nobel Peace laureate Jimmy Carter, who served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981, has died peacefully at the age of 100 in his hometown of Plains, Georgia. According to a statement from The Carter Center, he was surrounded by family at the time of his passing.
Donald Trump, the 45th president, expressed condolences and reflected on Carter’s legacy in a heartfelt statement on social media. “The challenges Jimmy faced as President came at a pivotal time for our country, and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans. For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude,” Trump wrote. He extended his sympathies to the Carter family, stating that he and his wife Melania were thinking warmly of them during this difficult time.
Carter’s life and presidency were marked by both triumphs and challenges. Rising from humble beginnings as a peanut farmer in rural Georgia, he ascended to the White House with a vision rooted in human rights and social justice. Among his most notable achievements was brokering the historic Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel, a peace agreement that remains a cornerstone of Middle Eastern diplomacy.
However, his administration faced significant challenges, including the Iranian hostage crisis and economic struggles, leading to his defeat in the 1980 election by Ronald Reagan. Despite his single term, Carter’s post-presidency became a testament to his enduring commitment to public service.
Through the Carter Center, which he founded in 1982, Carter championed global health initiatives, human rights, and international peace, earning him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. His legacy as a tireless advocate for social and economic justice reshaped his image over the years.
Carter’s passing comes just over a month after the death of his wife, Rosalynn Carter, with whom he shared a remarkable 77-year marriage. He is survived by their four children.
