Executive Overreach In House Speakership Saga

By: The People Newspaper

In a dramatic escalation of Liberia’s ongoing political crisis, President Joseph Boakai has reportedly pressured House Speaker Fonati Koffa to resign, threatening to strip him of key immunities, including security and police protection. Despite the alleged ultimatum, Speaker Koffa has refused to yield, asserting his commitment to upholding the rule of law.

Clash Over Constitutional Authority
As the second in line of succession under the Liberian Constitution, Speaker Koffa holds a pivotal role in the country’s governance structure. The President’s alleged actions to coerce his resignation have raised concerns of executive overreach, threatening to undermine the balance of power between Liberia’s branches of government.

Capitol Violence Sparks Public Outcry
The tensions follow a violent incident on Monday when armed police officers, reportedly acting on orders influenced by the Executive, stormed the Capitol Building. Their intervention, purportedly aimed at enforcing the controversial 2025 budget hearings, resulted in injuries to lawmakers and staffers. Speaker Koffa had previously denounced the hearings as unconstitutional and urged the Executive to distance itself from the process.

Among the injured were Rep. Luther Collins (Gbarpolu County), who suffered severe arm injuries, and Rep. Yekeh Kolubah (District #10, Montserrado County). Multiple staff members were also harmed, including one seen bleeding heavily in live video footage. The police action has drawn widespread criticism as an attack on the Legislature’s independence.

Speaker Koffa Condemns Executive Interference
In a strongly worded statement, Speaker Koffa blasted the Executive Branch for escalating tensions. “The brutal actions against lawmakers and staffers by state security forces, under the Executive’s watch, are unacceptable and treasonous. Such interference undermines our democracy and violates the Constitution,” he declared. Koffa called on all parties to respect the Supreme Court’s authority and urged restraint to prevent further unrest.

Executive Faces Backlash as Majority Bloc Pushes Agenda
Meanwhile, the Majority Bloc, reportedly backed by the Executive, has intensified its campaign to strip Speaker Koffa of his immunities. Despite their efforts, both blocs adjourned legislative sessions on Tuesday due to a lack of quorum, leaving the impasse unresolved.

The heavy police presence at the Capitol continues to heighten tensions, with critics accusing the Executive of weaponizing state institutions to weaken the Legislature. As the crisis unfolds, concerns grow over the implications for Liberia’s democratic stability and the separation of powers.

Speaker Koffa’s defiance and calls for accountability have positioned him as a key figure resisting what many see as an overreach by the Boakai administration.
