House of Representatives Warns Against Unauthorized Budget Hearings Amidst Tensions

Monrovia, Liberia – The Leadership of the House of Representatives has issued a firm warning against unauthorized budget hearings, labeling them as actions inconsistent with a recent Supreme Court ruling.

This comes as reports emerge of absent lawmakers organizing themselves into ad hoc committees to conduct hearings independently.

In an official statement released today, the House emphasized that such actions contravene the Supreme Court’s December 6 ruling on the constitutionality of certain members’ actions within the legislature. The ruling asserted that only duly authorized sessions chaired by Hon. Dixon Seboe, Chairman on Ways, Means, and Finance, hold legal standing.

“All spending entities are hereby advised not to honor any invitation or hearing not scheduled by Hon. Dixon Seboe,” the statement read, warning that any contrary actions will be deemed ultra vires and void at law.

The House urged lawmakers who are unclear about the court’s decision to seek legal clarification rather than undermine the rule of law. Furthermore, all members were encouraged to attend the upcoming session on December 10, which aims to resolve ongoing disputes and refocus efforts on legislative priorities.

The Leadership’s call for unity and legality underscores growing concerns about maintaining order and constitutional adherence in the legislature. The statement concluded with an appeal to prioritize the shared responsibility of serving the Liberian people.

With the political impasse in the House attracting significant public attention, all eyes are now on Tuesday’s session, where the next chapter in this unfolding drama is expected to play out.
