Monrovia, Liberia – The Alternative National Congress (ANC) has sharply criticized the Justice Minister’s interpretation of a Supreme Court opinion that allegedly led to the illegal removal of the Speaker of the House of Representatives. In a press release issued on December 12, 2024, the ANC described the development as a significant threat to Liberia’s democracy and the rule of law.
The statement, signed by ANC officials, expressed deep concern and disappointment over what they call a “misinterpretation” of the Court’s ruling. The party said the incident evokes painful memories of a time when democratic principles in Liberia were undermined for the benefit of those in power.
“We unequivocally condemn the illegal removal of the Speaker, an action that blatantly disregards the established rules of the House of Representatives and violates the Constitution of Liberia,” the ANC stated. The party emphasized that while it respects the majority bloc’s prerogative to change leadership, such actions must strictly adhere to the rule of law.
The ANC labeled the removal as “hasty and unlawful,” warning that it poses a threat to Liberia’s governance and economic stability. “The orchestrated removal of the Speaker by the government does nothing to enhance its credibility; rather, it appears to be a mere exercise in settling political scores,” the statement added.
The ANC expressed disappointment with the current administration, accusing it of reneging on promises to uphold integrity and democratic governance. “This reckless action underscores the urgent need for a balanced control of all three branches of government,” the statement noted.
The party called on Liberians, civil society organizations, and stakeholders to join its stance in denouncing the actions. The ANC urged citizens to advocate for a governance system grounded in justice, transparency, and accountability to protect the nation’s democratic gains.
“The same mistakes must not be repeated,” the party concluded, calling for collective efforts to rebuild a future that upholds the rule of law and Liberia’s democratic principles.
The press release concludes with the ANC’s signature statement: “Until Victory Is Won, & True Change Has Come.”
