ANC Accuses UP-Led Government of Prioritizing Party Buildings Over National Hardships

Monrovia, Liberia — The Alternative National Congress (ANC) has sharply criticized the Unity Party–led administration for what it describes as a glaring misplacement of priorities, accusing the government of investing more effort in expanding its party headquarters than addressing the worsening living conditions of ordinary Liberians.

In a strong-worded statement issued on December 2, the ANC said it is “profoundly disappointed” that while citizens grapple with soaring prices of basic commodities, widespread unemployment, a struggling health sector, dilapidated infrastructure, and a stagnant economy, the government has chosen to channel resources into political property expansion.

According to the ANC, the administration’s focus on strengthening its political real estate shows a government “out of touch with the daily hardships of its citizens” and failing to pursue policies that would uplift struggling families, support market women, create opportunities for young people, and stabilize essential goods.

The party further alleged that many government officials continue to benefit from “unchecked allowances, unnecessary overseas trips, inflated contracts, and opaque financial dealings,” even as citizens cry out for economic relief. With the dry season beginning, the ANC pointed to worsening water shortages and the Liberia Electricity Corporation’s rationing of power as signs of a system collapsing while leaders look the other way.

“This is not governance—it is self-serving politics at the expense of the ordinary people,” the statement read, stressing that Liberians did not elect a government to place party interests above national welfare.

The ANC is urging the Unity Party administration to abandon what it calls political indulgence and redirect its energy toward meaningful policies that tackle poverty, food insecurity, joblessness, and the breakdown of public services.

“The Liberian people deserve better. They deserve a government that works for them, not one that enriches itself while citizens struggle to survive,” the statement concluded.

It was signed by Desmond Ujay Nimely, National Secretary General of the Alternative National Congress.
