New York, USA – Ambassador Sarah Safyn Fyneah has stepped down from her role as Liberia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, just days after President Joseph Boakai returned from the UN General Assembly. Her resignation was accepted by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres during a meeting on October 7.
Throughout her tenure, Fyneah was a strong advocate for issues such as Security Council reform, climate change, and the Women, Youth, Peace, and Security agenda. She credited President Boakai for his vital support, expressing pride in her accomplishments and the enhancement of Liberia’s global standing under his leadership.
Guterres praised Fyneah for her dedication to the UN’s principles and noted her significant role in Liberia’s successful bid for a non-permanent Security Council seat for 2026-2027.
In her farewell remarks, Fyneah expressed gratitude to the UN and reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to its objectives, calling her time at the organization an immense honor. She commended Guterres for his leadership in promoting peace and human rights globally.
Fyneah’s distinguished career includes the initiation of Liberia’s Development Diplomacy Program in Sierra Leone and various high-level positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Liberian Embassy in Washington, D.C. Her extensive experience spans political affairs, public information, and gender advocacy, collaborating with numerous organizations.
