The Pan African Initiative on Media and Journalism, AfroMedia, has announced a call for entries for the “Athar” Short and Documentary Film Award, a competition launched by Egypt-based Misr El Kheir Foundation.
In a press release issued this week, AfroMedia said the award is intended to recognize films that document development issues, sustainability, and humanitarian initiatives across Africa.
The competition is open to journalists, media professionals, young and amateur filmmakers, media and film students, small production companies, and institutions documenting development projects.
According to the organizers, eligible films must have been produced within the last three years and must have a duration of between two and 20 minutes. Films must focus on social, environmental, or economic development or sustainability.
Other requirements include that all footage must be original or used with legal permission, and that films not in Arabic must include Arabic or English subtitles. Accepted formats include documentaries, short fiction films, and animated films. Prior festival screening is not a requirement.
AfroMedia said the award seeks to promote visual storytelling as a means of highlighting community stories and innovative solutions to development challenges.
The Misr El Kheir Foundation, founded in 2007, is one of Egypt’s largest non-profit organizations working in the area of sustainable development.
