Monrovia, Liberia — The Montserrado Caucus of the Mano River Union Youth Parliament has publicly thrown its weight behind the nomination of Cllr. Cornelia Kruah as Liberia’s Minister of Youth and Sports, rejecting arguments that her appointment contravenes the Executive Law.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, the caucus responded to criticisms from some former and serving officials as well as legal commentators, describing their interpretation of the law as flawed and misleading. The statement was signed by Hon. Jamaima S. Tweh, Montserrado County Parliamentarian and Chairperson on Gender and Inclusion.

The caucus explained that Section 10.2 of the Executive Law, which references county balance in Cabinet appointments, is not absolute but rather conditional. According to the group, the inclusion of the phrase “as far as practicable” clearly indicates flexibility, serving as guidance instead of a binding legal requirement.

They further cited Article 54 of Liberia’s 1986 Constitution, which vests the President with the authority to nominate Cabinet Ministers, subject to Senate approval. This power, the caucus emphasized, allows the President to consider national priorities such as competence, integrity, and the overall effectiveness of governance.

The statement also warned against interpretations that could promote exclusion. The caucus argued that denying a qualified Liberian the opportunity to serve based on age or county of origin undermines constitutional principles of equality and non-discrimination. They maintained that Kruah’s youth should be viewed as a strength, particularly in a country where a significant portion of the population is under 35 years old.

Beyond youth representation, the caucus highlighted the persistent gender imbalance in senior government positions. They stressed that appointing capable women to leadership roles is essential to advancing inclusive governance and promoting social justice across the country.

Describing Cllr. Kruah as professionally qualified and well-prepared for public service, the caucus insisted that access to public office should be determined by merit rather than political entrenchment. As the Senate moves toward reviewing the nomination, the group urged lawmakers to rise above narrow legal arguments and political maneuvering.

They called on senators to assess the nomination within the broader context of constitutional intent and national interest, expressing optimism for a swift and successful confirmation. According to the caucus, such an outcome would reaffirm Liberia’s commitment to youth empowerment, gender equality, and forward-looking leadership at a critical moment in the nation’s democratic development.
