Bong County Electoral District #6 Representative Moima Briggs Mensah has described the removal of embattled House Speaker Cllr. Jonathan Fonati Koffa as disheartening and troubling.
Speaking over the weekend, the Bong County lawmaker criticized her colleagues for focusing on internal conflicts instead of discussing pressing national issues that affect the Liberian people. She asserted that the ongoing disputes, marked by baseless arguments, are insensitive and ultimately detrimental to the country.
Mensah emphasized that the legislature operates under established rules, stating that those calling for the Speaker’s removal must gather the necessary support in accordance with the law, referencing the removals of former Speakers Edwin Melvin Snow and Alex Tyler.
Expressing her frustration, she noted that some lawmakers appear to have been financially induced to make decisions that do not serve the public interest. She warned that such actions could undermine the progress the nation has made.
Moreover, she reiterated her commitment to Speaker Koffa, asserting, “I stand for the law and want the right thing to be done. I will support him until a proper process is followed for his removal. Until then, he remains my Speaker.”
In addition, Rep. Mensah called for an audit of the legislature, arguing that transparency, accountability, and good governance are essential for Liberia’s democratic progress and future trajectory.
