Monrovia – Prominent lawyer Tiawan Saye Gongloe is demanding full disclosure of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s salary, questioning the government’s transparency over the announced 40% pay cut.
In his “Question for the Weekend,” Gongloe noted that Liberians were told the President voluntarily reduced his salary by 40%, but the baseline figure was never made public.
“But 40% of what?” he asked.
Citing Article 60 of the Constitution, which states presidential salaries are set by the Legislature and cannot be increased or diminished during their term, Gongloe posed four questions:
- What salary did the Legislature legally fix for the President?
- What was Boakai’s gross annual salary when he assumed office?
- How much does he actually receive after the 40% reduction?
- How is the reduction being implemented in line with Article 60?
He also cited Article 15(c), which guarantees the public’s right to be informed about the government.
“This is not a personal question. It is not a partisan question. It is a transparency question,” Gongloe wrote.
