Monrovia, — Former President George Manneh Weah returns to Liberia tomorrow, September 2, with Roberts International Airport (RIA) imposing special security measures amid heightened political tensions.
The Liberia Airport Authority says passengers should arrive earlier than usual, while well-wishers must gather at the RIA Public School. According to the airport advisory, “Only designated well-wishers appointed by the Organizing Committee” will be allowed beyond that point.
The airport also says “Vehicular and pedestrian traffic will be regulated by Joint Security,” as authorities prepare to manage movement around the facility.
The measures come as Weah returns amid political tensions following the arrest of former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor over drug-related charges.
Weah has condemned the case and accused the government of political persecution, saying he would “rally the masses” against what he described as a “tyrannical government.”
His return is also reviving memories of tensions during his previous arrival in September 2025, when clashes reportedly erupted between CDC supporters and security forces, with police using tear gas to disperse crowds.
With joint security now set to regulate access, traffic and movement around RIA, Wednesday’s homecoming is already attracting significant attention.
