Unity Party SG Amos Tweah Set to Defy Ombudsman Directive on Political Code of Conduct

Monrovia, Liberia — The Office of the Ombudsman has taken a firm stance against appointed officials engaging in political activities, as outlined in Section 5.1 of the Code of Conduct. Following President Joseph Boakai’s commissioning of three Ombudspersons in August 2024, the office initiated a review process to ensure compliance among government officials.

In a recent press statement, the Ombudsman announced that 26 officials had been instructed to choose between retaining their political party affiliations or their government positions. So far, four officials have resigned from their party roles, demonstrating compliance with the directive. However, many others remain resistant.

The Ombudsman emphasized the necessity of adherence, stating that failure to comply could result in removal from office under Section 5.9 of the Code. They have given a five-day ultimatum for compliance, urging all affected officials to submit evidence of their decisions.

In response to this announcement, Amos Tweah, the security general of the Unity Party and director of the Liberia Petroleum Refining Company (LPRC), expressed strong objections. “The Chairperson of the Ombudsman does not have the authority to demand my resignation,” Tweah stated. “It is the President who appointed me, and only he has the right to request my resignation.” He further argued that he and his colleagues are not violating the law, as they are not actively participating in any political activities.

Cllr. Findley Karnga, also speaking on behalf of the Unity Party, reinforced the Ombudsman’s position, asserting that “it is a conflict of interest to hold two positions, particularly in government and political parties.” He urged those in such situations to resign from one role to maintain the integrity of their public service.

The situation highlights a growing tension between the Ombudsman’s enforcement of ethical standards and the resistance from some government officials who claim to operate within the bounds of the law. As the deadline approaches, the ramifications of these actions could significantly impact Liberia’s political landscape and the integrity of its governance.
