Grand Kru County, Liberia – Law enforcement in Grand Kru County has made two key arrests in what authorities describe as a significant operation against drug trafficking and illegal firearms possession. The Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) apprehended a Nigerian national and a Liberian citizen in separate incidents over the past week, both allegedly involved in illegal drug distribution and firearms possession.

According to the LDEA, 41-year-old Nigerian national Ama Eze was arrested on February 20 in Plainview, Jlodeh Trenbo District, while reportedly attempting to transport heroin and percussor to Pleebo, Maryland County. A search of Eze’s possessions allegedly uncovered 13 tubes of heroin weighing 142.6 grams and three plastics of percussor weighing 97.8 grams, with an estimated street value of $3,573 USD (or LRD $678,870).

Authorities say Eze has been formally charged under Liberia’s 2023 Amended Drug Law, which prohibits the possession, sale, and distribution of controlled substances. He has since been sent to the Barclayville Magisterial Court.

Days later, on February 22, LDEA officers raided the home of 56-year-old Anthony Gray in Parluken, Forpoh District. The agency claims the operation, carried out under a search and seizure warrant, uncovered 3kg of compressed marijuana valued at approximately $317 USD (or LRD $60,230), along with three long-range single-barrel guns and seven cartridges hidden in a bag. Gray has also been charged under the 2023 Amended Drug Law and sent to court.

The LDEA says these arrests are part of its ongoing efforts to curb the drug trade in Liberia. However, drug-related crimes remain a persistent issue, with many communities calling for stronger enforcement and rehabilitation programs to address the root causes of substance abuse.
