Monrovia, Liberia – In a passionate appeal to fellow lawmakers, Senator Numene T.H. Bartekwa of Grand Kru County has addressed the ongoing crisis within the House of Representatives that threatens the leadership of Speaker J. Fonati Koffa. Speaking on behalf of the Southeastern Legislative Caucus, Bartekwa highlighted the critical moment facing their region, as representation in national governance is at risk.
In his statement, Bartekwa recalled the significant departures of senior officials from the southeastern region following the 2023 elections, including former President George Weah and other key figures. He emphasized that the election of Koffa as Speaker marked a rare achievement for the region, placing him in a pivotal position within the government.
“It is shocking and disheartening to see the threats against Speaker Koffa amidst the current turmoil in the House,” Bartekwa stated, urging his colleagues, particularly those opposed to Koffa, to reconsider their actions. He acknowledged the diverse reasons behind their decisions but implored them to remember that no leader is perfect and that unity is essential for their collective strength.
Bartekwa’s call to action emphasized the bonds of kinship, urging lawmakers to recognize Koffa as “your blood” and to work together for the greater good of the region. “If Koffa is removed, who will represent us at the highest levels of government?” he questioned, stressing the need for solidarity.
The senator concluded by assuring his colleagues of ongoing engagement with Speaker Koffa to address any concerns they may have, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a united front. “Remember that our family tree can bend but cannot break,” Bartekwa added, reinforcing the need for collaboration during these challenging times.
As tensions rise within the House of Representatives, the Southeastern Legislative Caucus remains committed to preserving their representation and fostering unity among its members in support of Speaker Koffa’s leadership.
